Confused about SEO, CSE, CRM, Affiliate Marketing etc?

The best was to start is with a glossary:

Blog - Blogging

The concept of a BLOG is similar to a diary. Entries are constantly added. The newest addition is on top always pushing the previous information down (similar to a stack). Blogs allow customers or groups to share information with one another. They are easy to maintain and most of them require account login to post information.

Cookies - (all flavors!)

A "Cookie"  basically refers to the dropping of information on your computer by the site you are visiting. These cookies are referred to as "1st party cookies". The reason they are placed on your computer is to enhance your experience the next time you return to the same store. Cookies dropped by a third party are usually done to track statistics or display ads on publisher sites.

YOU CAN CONTROL the ability to drop cookies and how long they should remain on your computer.

Each site posts their privacy policy and their use of cookies.

Domain Name

Similar to a license plate it is the unique identifier to your web site. Their exists only one with that name.

i.e. www.creativerewards.com

FTP -  File Transfer Protocol

This method is commonly used to transfer large files between two sites. Passwords are required.

Home Page (Main page)

The very first page seen by your customers. Commonly referred to as the index page.

Hypertext

Text that links to another page or file. You can easily spot a hyperlink when your arrow turns into a hand.

IP Number/address - Internet Protocol Number
    123.4546.789.1

A unique IP number  exists for every machine on the Internet. This number is used to track fraudulent clicks and by authorities to prosecute criminals.

JavaScript

The programming language most commonly used to design web pages.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

Creating or designing web pages in a manner that will cause then to achieve a high page rank when you search for results from any search engine.

Today there are 1,000's of companies that are selling their services as SEO management and SEO consultants. The key to this process is clearly to maximize the relevancy of the information and build excellent Meta Tags. Fixing broken links and making your site crawler friendly also helps.

We hope the above phrases were helpful. Creative Rewards Internet Marketing

Search Engine Marketing? TBD

CSE - Comparison Shopping Engines

These Companies compare the prices of various stores one under the other and give consumers the ability to quickly find the lowest price for a particular item.

An example of a CSE would be Become.com, Pricegrabber.com, Shopping.com, Bizrate.com, Dealtime.com Nextag.com and various others. All have similar business models. They all list the highest bidders first. This maximizes their revenue and promotes their best paying customers. Being on the first page of these sites doesn't guarantee that you are looking at the absolute lowest price. Many sites require that you click on sort by price to obtain that information.

Another important distinction between the larger and smaller sites is the quality of vendors that are allowed to participate on their site. Just because a site is listed on any of the above mentioned sites does NOT guarantee that they are licensed dealers for every product they are selling.

Many sites have  a rating system and some are better than others. Customer feedback is a great indicator and ever here be cautious of the less scrupulous sites posting fake reviews to boost their top paying clients to the top.

Over the next few months we will be adding in depth reviews on each of the CSE's and a summary that captures the similarities and differences across all of them. We welcome your feedback and experience so that we can include that in our upcoming review.

Affiliate Marketing - Affiliates are "partner web sites" that promote your companies goods and services, however they only get paid upon making a sale. You can pay then per click, however must programs use the CPA or cost per acquisition model which rewards the affiliate a percentage of the sale after the actual transaction has been completed. Some programs will continue to pay these affiliates for 30-60 days after the initial sale. There are some programs that actually pay commissions for the life of the customer.

Commission Junction, Performics, and LinkShare are the three largest platforms that manage affiliate programs. They all have legal templates and standard business commission structures that allow you to implement a program relatively quickly. All of them charge a premium to host your program.

SEO - Search Engine Optimization

Imagine if every time someone searched for a product you sold you came up on the first page. Think of how much money you would save on these natural searches vs. having to pay per click via Google, Yahoo, MSN and others. There are numerous techniques to improve this and it does require constant improvements.

Google Checkout - Googles' new form of checking out on the web. To entice retailers Google first offered 10 x the dollars spent on adwords in FREE credit card processing. For Example spend $10,000 on adwords and get $100,000 in FREE credit card processing. The normal fee is 2% and 20 cents per transaction.

Google has a promotion until December 31, 2007 - FREE Processing on all transactions. Why would Google do this? I think that in one year Google will have the worlds largest consumer knowledge base and the ability to built all sorts of predictive models.

Internet Tricks and tips:

1) Do I need to type www.domain-name. extension every time?
NO most sites will work with creativerewards.com is enough. Try typing the words creativerewards in your browser and hit Ctrl+Enter and the browser will propagate the field with www and .com (neat!)

2) How do I correct a 301 Redirect?

Access your file called .htaccess and add the following text on a brand new line. Be careful not to delete existing code. redirect 301 /prices/prices.htm http://newwebsite.com/newprices.htm
This will redirect requests looking in directory prices for file named prices.htm and redirects it to www.newwebsite.com/newprices.htm. Do not use http on the first part of the code.
